Beauty is defined as a combination of qualities; shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the eye. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, different people see beauty in different ways. But when it comes to a human being, the word beauty is generally afforded to those with a pleasing physical appearance.
In the world of fashion photography, beauty is not so simple. Models being photographed, with makeup and styled hair, wearing equisite clothes, posing in remarkable locations, expectedly crafting beautiful images. For many people, it sounds as easy as a walk in the park. The truth is often far from that; the beautiful image that graces packaging, or a page of a magazine, usually involves many hours of planning, preparation, hard work and Post-production.
Thomas Knieps is a professional beauty and fashion photographer, based in Germany. It’s likely that you’ve already seen his work: advertisements for Schwarzkopf, Martini, Lancôme, Johnson & Johnson, Wella, Nike, Philips, Right Guard, et al. His work has been published in many major fashion magazines such as Elle Germany, Elle Spain, Vogue Spain, L’ Officiel and HUF Magazine #22.
Thomas’ interest in photography started when he was just ten years old. “My father used to take lots of pictures in his free time; developing and enlarging them in a laboratory of a friend, who was a professional photographer. This process, of catching a moment and forever saving it on paper, deeply fascinated me.” Thomas’ fascination with photography never diminished; his growing interest leading him to become the successful photographer that he is today.
Thomas has an eye for beauty. There is no doubt about his ability to capture the essence of beauty with his lens. “I love beauty, the beauty of life as well as the beauty of nature. My strength is to work with colors and light. Because beauty is also subjective, it has a lot of different facets.”
Beauty photography often involves extremely high levels of technical skill in terms of makeup, hair and photography.
