Photographer Dennis Valdez: When Fashion Meets Fantasy – by Hari Mountford
Up and coming artists from all over the world came together to showcase their work at the recent Talented Art Fair in Brick Lane’s Truman Brewery. Housed in this hip warehouse-style space, the fair welcomed some of the globe’s most innovative and exciting emerging talent, from ceramicists to painters, sculptors to photographers.
Dennis Valdez, a fashion photographer, was one of only four photographers exhibiting at the show: described by the organisers as focused on grandeur. Valdez’s work is a creative mix of high-end fashion and fantasy. Think Tim Anderson meets Alexander McQueen, and throw in a bit of Narnia for good measure, and you have a vague idea of what Valdez is all about.
With fairy-tale-like outfits embellished with all manner of sequins, pearls and feathers, the models in Dennis’ images could quite easily have just stepped out of a film. Headwear, in the form of elaborate and opulent crowns, coupled with lace and ruffled dresses created an ethereal vibe, and the setting of Epping Forest certainly added to the fantastical theme.
Styling of the models ranged from dreamlike 1920’s-esque feathers and lace to sultrier red-lipped, and fiery-haired looks: a palate of blacks, whites, silvers and creams enabled striking designs to really stand out.
The detailing, not just on each garment, but in the exactness of the women’s poses and the precise angle of their gaze, is perfect. In fact detail very much seems to be something that Dennis Valdez goes in for– even his business cards, which were transparent and appeared as if you were looking through a camera’s viewfinder – were well-thought out.
This is one emerging artist you should know about. Although Dennis Valdez is relatively new on the fashion scene – he began as a landscape photographer before moving over to the more fashion focused shoots he does now – there is a distinct feeling of experience behind his photographs.
Incredible garments, beautiful models and perfectly composed sets mean that Valdez is a name you will most definitely be hearing a lot more of. Fantastical fashion? Watch this space….
Dennis Valdez has been helped on his photographic journey by Mr. Peter Edwards. Dennis also undertakes other photography styles such as portraits, beauty, family and kids’ portraits.
