Gender F*cked, photography by Melissa Isabell Quiñones for HUF Magazine

“The editorial is a celebration of Gender-queer, we want to be a voice for the non-binary population. Gender-queer, also known as non-binary, is a catch-all category for gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine, identities which are outside the gender binary and cisnormativity. Gender-queer people may express a combination of masculinity and femininity, or neither, in their gender expression.

Though we are making progress when it comes to this topic, often we see this topic being brought up in negative or controversial manner. In doing so we fail to realize the celebration, pride and activism our gender-queer peers display on a daily basis. To be a gender bending or non-binary individual is to be completely freed from society’s gender binary standards. In doing so we’re able to accept humanity on a broader spectrum, rather than define each other by just masculine male and feminine female. The truth is we are a complex species, we aren’t just a black and white.. instead we’re a broad spectrum spanning from black to white, with many shades of gray in between.

A gender bender (LGBT slang: one who genderfucks) is a person who disrupts, or “bends”, expected gender roles. Gender bending is sometimes a form of social activism undertaken to destroy rigid gender roles and defy sex-role stereotypes, notably in cases where the gender-nonconforming person finds these roles oppressive. It can be a reaction to, and protest of, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny or misandry.” – Miguel C. Martinez
