The Birdcage (1997) US

Cinema Queer by Marcelino Rosas

A gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion agree to put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée’s right-wing moralistic parents.

Why do I like it? Why do I recommend it?

This is a hilarious movie that in my opinion beats out the original “La Cage au Folles.” The amount of fun characters who are all well fleshed out and different is a joy to watch. A true classic that is not to be missed.

To me, the comedy is spot on. The jokes can go from crude, to sneaky, and to extremely smart. Give this gem a chance! It’s one of my all time favorites and I’d confidently recommend this one to everyone.

Brilliant performances by Nathan Lane and Robin Williams are perfection. They were accompanied by Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Dan Futterman, Calista Flockhart, Hank Azaria, And Christine Baranski.
